Wow! Wahnsinn! So viele!

Ach was.

openBC China is off to a great start

The events in China are in full swing and so is Bill Liao who is itching to blog about everything. But the restrictions are in force and we are still trying to register openBLOG with the Chinese government. I would like to paint a small picture of the goings-on in China over the past few days so please have a look at the photos here:

or go to the openBLOG photos page.

There has been a great response to the openBC launch with a large number of journalists attending the press conferences and other professionals joining the evening events in Beijing and Shanghai. The last event will be held in Guangzhou tonight and will be just as busy. I am sure that Bill will provide us with lots more details once he is on the plane out of China.

Was soll das aussagen?

The physical meaning of synchronization and simultaneity in Special Relativity

Authors: de Abreu, Rodrigo

Based on two previous papers, the physical meaning of synchronization and simultaneity as is presented in Einstein's Special Relativity paper of 1905 is reconsidered. We follow Einstein's argumentation to introduce a criterium of synchronization and for the same arguments we arrive at a different criterium for synchronization. From that we conclude that simultaneity is absolute.

A Lorentz-invariant look at quantum clock synchronization protocols based on distributed entanglement

Authors: Yurtsever, Ulvi; Dowling, Jonathan P.

Recent work has raised the possibility that quantum information theory techniques can be used to synchronize atomic clocks nonlocally. One of the proposed algorithms for quantum clock synchronization (QCS) requires distribution of entangled pure singlets to the synchronizing parties. Such remote entanglement distribution normally creates a relative phase error in the distributed singlet state which then needs to be purified asynchronously. We present a fully relativistic analysis of the QCS protocol which shows that asynchronous entanglement purification is not possible, and, therefore, that the proposed QCS scheme remains incomplete. We discuss possible directions of research in quantum information theory which may lead to a complete, working QCS protocol.

Citebase - Quantum Positioning System: "Quantum Positioning System

Authors: Bahder, Thomas B.

A quantum positioning system (QPS) is proposed that can provide a user with all four of his space-time coordinates. The user must carry a corner cube reflector, a good clock, and have a two-way classical channel of communication with the origin of the reference frame. Four pairs of entangled photons (biphotons) are sent through four interferometers: three interferometers are used to determine the user's spatial position, and an additional interferometer is used to synchronize the user's clock to coordinate time in the reference frame. The spatial positioning part of the QPS is similar to a classical time-of-arrival (TOA) system, however, a classical TOA system (such as GPS) must have synchronized clocks that keep coordinate time and therefore the clocks must have long-term stability, whereas in the QPS only a photon coincidence counter is needed and the clocks need only have short-term stability. Several scenarios are considered for a QPS: one is a terrestrial system and another is a space-based-system composed of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Calculations indicate that for a space-based system, neglecting atmospheric effects, a position accuracy below the 1 cm-level is possible for much of the region near the Earth. The QPS may be used as a primary system to define a global 4-dimensional reference frame.

Citebase - Clock Synchronization and Navigation in the Vicinity of the Earth

GPS Clock synchronization

Clock synchronization is the backbone of applications such as high-accuracy satellite navigation, geolocation, space-based interferometry, and cryptographic communication systems. The high accuracy of synchronization needed over satellite-to-ground and satellite-to-satellite distances requires the use of general relativistic concepts. The role of geometrical optics and antenna phase center approximations are discussed in high accuracy work. The clock synchronization problem is explored from a general relativistic point of view, with emphasis on the local measurement process and the use of the tetrad formalism as the correct model of relativistic measurements. The treatment makes use of J. L. Synge's world function of space-time as a basic coordinate independent geometric concept. A metric is used for space-time in the vicinity of the Earth, where coordinate time is proper time on the geoid. The problem of satellite clock syntonization is analyzed by numerically integrating the geodesic equations of motion for low-Earth orbit (LEO), geosynchronous orbit (GEO), and highly elliptical orbit (HEO) satellites. Proper time minus coordinate time is computed for satellites in these orbital regimes. The frequency shift as a function of time is computed for a signal observed on the Earth's geoid from a LEO, GEO, and HEO satellite. Finally, the problem of geolocation in curved space-time is briefly explored using the world function formalism.

How to Start a Startup

How to Start a Startup

(This essay is derived from a talk at the Harvard Computer Society. It's not meant to be complete; I skipped some topics I've already written about in 'How to Make Wealth,' in Hackers & Painters.)

You need three things to create a successful startup: to start with good people, to make something customers actually want, and to spend as little money as possible. Most startups that fail do it because they fail at one of these. A startup that does all three will probably succeed.

CoolTechZone::Google Launches RSS Reader

Google, the world’s most used search engine, has launched another product in Beta, a RSS reader, reported Google Rumors in a recent listing.

Google Reader is a web-based RSS reader that requires a login, similar to GMail, before letting you start organizing your feeds. Readers can organize the feeds with various names, import subscriptions from other RSS readers or services and easily subscribe to feeds simply by entering the RSS URL.

According to Google Rumors, the index page appears to be empty at this point, which means Google does not include feeds from widely read news publications such as Reuters. Whether that would change in the near future is unclear at the moment.

Google’s RSS reader will surely put other web based RSS reader services such as Newsgator and Pluck on high alert."

This article gives you an overview of how the Eclipse Platform supports XML (Extensible Markup Language) development. Eclipse does not support XML code editing right out of the box. However, because Eclipse is a platform-independent framework for building developer tools, you can add support for new languages relatively easily.

A multitude of XML plug-ins have been developed, and new ones are created all the time. This article focuses on the plug-in called XMLBuddy, because its feature-rich set contains most of the functions needed for XML document development. We do touch on other plug-ins when they provide a richer set of user options for specific tasks. This article will familiarize you with the basic XML editing features, but bear in mind that Eclipse is a dynamic frameset that puts an endless array of tools and features at your fingertips.

"We are all creatures of habit. We get set in our ways and comfortable with our working set of assumptions about the world around us. Yet sometimes those assumptions are misplaced, a sure-fire cause of annoyance. This goes for the XML community as much as any other group. For XML pros and occasional users alike, it's worth critically examining some of the 'common sense' we've come to rely upon."

Wine HQ

"Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.

Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris."

Founders Unite for Startup School

"[The following article was originally intended for Wired News, but was rejected for not being about any of its advertisers.]

Experts agree that it smells like a new startup age is beginning to boom. This time, however, it's being led by geeks themselves instead of business guys. At the center of this democratizing force is the new funding firm Y Combinator, led by Internet entrepreneur and essayist Paul Graham.

Y Combinator burst onto the scene by offering small grants to promising graduates (average age: 23) to pursue their ambitions in startup form over the summer. And this past weekend, the people behind Y Combinator, in association with the Harvard Computer Society, took their show to the masses, inviting 500 of the most promising startup founders to Harvard University for an intense one-day lecture series on all aspects of starting a company.

The weekend was kicked off with a smaller reception at Y Combinator's offices the night before. The room pulsed with networking between the various would-be founders, as well as some interesting meeting with some of the guests of honor.

'Last night was the first time I met my lawyer,' said Steve Huffman, Lord Ruler and Supreme Leader* of Reddit, one of the companies Y Combinator has funded. 'The first thing I said was 'Am I getting charged for this?' 'No,' she told me. 'There ar"

Welcome Google to the world of microcontent

"Dam!

I guess I don't make it onto Jason Shellen's list. And I guess Adam Bosworth doesn't consider me important enough to get back to me and followup from our meetings on microcontent from six months ago.

Oh well - cause it sure is nice to see Google swallow the red pill so hard. And gulp it down.

Regardless of what their schemas loOk like, we'll support them and bake them into our 'Structured Blogging' compatiblity box. That way people won't be locked into the Google schema and can post their Reviews, Events, Lists, etc. - anywhere they want.

They can choose to put it into Google cloud - or anywhere else. Or both. That's what the 'OutputThis' service will alow - sending stuff to multiple locations - your favoritre destinations.

Anyway - this is great news for us 'structured content nuts' - as long as Google publicly exposes all this content and lets others spider it and index it - as well.

Here we go.

I bet Tantek is happy - too. And Bob and Salim.

Now where was that San Francisco Restaurant Reviews server? I'd better go ask Gavin."

"Schriftstellervereinigung PEN greift Google an

"Studie zeigt Nachteile IP-basierter Telefonsysteme

Google Base Was Sort of Live

"“Post your items on Google.

Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.

Examples of items you can find in Google Base:

• Description of your party planning service
• Articles on current events from your website
• Listing of your used car for sale
• Database of protein structures

You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.”

This sounds big and immensely interesting. Is Google putting a layer in-between dynamic web sites and their databases, replacing MySQL/PostgreSQL/MS SQL, and creating a new GoogleSQL... possibly, with their ads in it? I can’t wait to try it."

Review Roundup from PC Magazine: Share and Play Tag on the New Web Playground

"Somewhere between Web and desktop search engines lies a new breed of 'community' search engines—sites where users share among themselves the bookmarks they've created and content they've encountered. Such sites can cut through the clutter that a typical Google search might return by adding the human element. After all, communities of knowledgeable, interested people can identify relevant sites with greater accuracy than a search engine. Plus, you can leverage the work already done by others and build on that base rather than repeat it."

The Interesting Economy

The Interesting Economy

"Like many great social software applications, Flickr began its life as something else. Flickr was built on a platform for a game called Game Neverending, which had a lot of great features including an in-game economy based on exchanging various totems that had different relative values. There was really only a barter economy, which left the 'innate' value of any individual item to be pretty opaque.

Today, Flickr has interestingness, which is a measure of some combination of how many times a picture has been viewed, how many comments it has, how many times it's been tagged or marked as a favorite, and some other special sauce. I suppose revealing the exact mix would encourage even more people to game the system, but the fact that it's not disclosed has led to a number of attempts to reverse-engineer the system. I doubt any of them are/will be successful (Flickr can update/evolve fast enough to change the algorithm if they figure it out) but that's probably going to be an ongoing dialogue.

When I think of things getting gamed, I think of Clay Shirky saying 'social software is stuff that gets spammed'. So maybe economies are things that get gamed.

What I'm wondering is, how is Flickr's interestingness different than the economy in Game Neverending? Than Second Life? (Or in Evercrack or Neverwinter or any of the other gaming platforms.) I"

(ip)

Creating sustainable value Posted in Flock by...

Creating sustainable value

Posted in Flock by bart on the October 20th, 2005

One of the questions I am asked most frequently is “what’s the business model for Flock?”

Here’swhy we think Flock is an exciting business opportunity and how weenvision creating a business that is sustainable over the long term.

Firefoxbroke the IE monopoly in the browser space.  Users once again havemeaningful choice on the web, and web developers and publishers areresponding to that by making their sites work for Firefox users. Users understand the value of the browser in keeping them safe onlineand providing them with a better user experience.  Web developersare able to take advantage of the modern web standards that aresupported in Firefox.  Industry leaders are recognizing the powerof the browser platform.  In sum: the browser is back!

Inthe ten years since Netscape 1.0 launched, the web has evolvedtremendously, but the user experience of the web browser has remainedlargely unchanged.  Firefox  supports a host of modern webstandards and eliminates many of the online nuisances that havesprouted up over the last decade.  Still, a user migrating fromNetscape 1 to Firefox 1 would feel right at home.  We think there’s room for innovating the web browser user experience, and the open soure, cross-platform, and actively developed Mozillacodebase is the perfect technology platform for such innovation.

Thebusiness case?  Well, Microsoft set the price of the browser to $0quite a while ago.  That proved to be a major hurdle back in theNetscape days, but what’s changed over the past few years is thatonline referral- and search-related business models have matureddramatically and in fact power big chunks of the Internet.  Hugebusinesses (like AOL Search) and thousands of niche online venturesalike are built around Google and Yahoo’s adword programs. These same business models are now providing the financial footing forweb browsers.  Opera’s CEO recently explained that hiscompany was able to release the browser for free thanks to an expandedsearch sponsorship arrangement with Google.  The MozillaFoundation has alluded to search related business arrangements and hascreated a for-profit subsidiary.  These success stories show thateven simple search “distribution” integration points in thebrowser can provide a solid financial footing for browser providers, and do so in a way that enhances the user experience (remember, thesearch box was added to Firefox because users needed a faster way tosearch online).  In sum, we’re quite comfortable that, ifenough users choose our browser, we can keep the lights on here at Flock without violating user’s privacy or compromising the user experience

Butof course over time we want to do better then just keeping the lightson.  We want to build a successful, sustainable business. While there’s certainly money to be made from stripmining users,as proven by the numerous malware providers and established mainstreamcompanies that routinely abuse their customers’ trust, we believethat, over time, the most successfulcompanies will be those that earn their users’ trust and focuspretty obsessively on solving problems for those users.  Best of all, it’s the right thing to do.

Letme give an example: offering users choice at all times is veryimportant to us.  Right now, Flock already works with a wide rangeof blogging platforms (Wordpress, Six Apart and Blogger), but, as ofyet, we don’t offer a choice of social bookmarks providers orphoto sharing services.  Fixing that is a high priority.  Ourgoal is to always offer users a number of choices, and, in addition, allow them to plug in any service that supports a standard, in the sameway that the Firefox and Flock searchboxes and the Flock blog editoralready do.

Firefox is a perfect case in point thatdemonstrates how you can do well by doing what’s right.  Theproject started off as a skunkworks project by a couple of guys whowanted to build a better browser.  The Firefox crew spent severalyears obsessing about how to build the perfect browser for regularusers.  In the process, they were able to create a bond of trustwith their users.  When a larger group of users started lookingfor a better alternative, their friends pointed them to Firefox. The organization has done well as a result: a year ago, there were adozen employees at the Mozilla Foundation, now there are several timesthat many working for the Mozilla Corporation.

Sohere’s the plan: we’re going to experiment andinnovate.  We plan to make a ton of mistakes, listen to our users, focus on building the best product that meets our users’needs.  Where there are obvious, proven, opportunities to generaterevenues in ways that respect our users’ privacy and don’thinder the user experience, we will pursue those.  But we firmlybelieve that doing right by our users is the best way to build asustainable, successful company, so expect us to focus pretty much all of our energy on innovating the web browser experience and earning your trust

Flock, Firefox and open source

Posted in Flock by bart on the October 20th, 2005

Inrecent weeks, several folks have asked why Flock is building a browser, not an extension, and about our relationship to the Mozillacommunity.  Let me try to address some of these questions.

Some background info
I’vebeen a member of the open source community for about six yearsnow.  Before Flock, I’ve contributed to the GNOME project,Eazel, two Linux companies abroad, OSAF and Mozilla, so I’mfamiliar with how open source works.  I’ve also writtenseveral articles on open source on the desktop.  In sum, I am afirm believer in the power of the open source development model. So it’s always been obvious to me that Flock should leverageexisting open source technologies and contribute most, if not all, ourenhancements back under an open source license.  And I’m notthe only person at Flock who’s familiar with the open source wayof doing things: most of us at Flock have years of experience workingin the open source community.  We’ve been in semi-stealthmode for a while, but starting with our upcoming developer previewrelease, expect us to operate in a very transparent manner.

Forking
Flockis not interested in forking the Mozilla code-base.  I have workedfor the Mozilla project and know first-hand that the project hasattracted some serious hacker talent.  One of the most appealingaspects of building on the Mozilla platform is that we can build on topof a platform that is designed, developed, and maintained by topengineering talent at Mozilla, IBM, Sun, Red Hat, Google and hundredsof community volunteers.  Flock is a small startup, and ourbusiness model is premised on being able to build on top of all thatwork.  In architecting our software, build systems and engineeringprocesses, we have given considerable thought to how our code will beable to evolve alongside the Mozilla code, without forking it.  Weare trying to pay particular attention to this in areas where we aredoing things slightly different from Firefox.  For example, in thearea of bookmarks, we implemented on top of the Firefox bookmarksarchitecture, while integrating social bookmarks.

Ofcourse, time will tell how successful we are in avoiding unnecessarydivergence between the Flock codebase and the Mozilla code.  Thisultimately depends on the thousands of engineering decisions we willmake in the coming months and years, but also on the level ofcommunication between folks here and the broader Mozillacommunity.  For our part, we are very serious about becomingactive participants in and contributors to the Mozilla community, starting in the very near future.  We are also very open toworking with folks at the Mozilla Foundation, the Mozilla Corporationand elsewhere to minimize the risk of platform divergence and havetaken the first steps to start that conversation.

There areany number of open source and commercial browsers built on top of theMozilla technology base, including Firefox, Seamonkey, Camino,Netscape, Epipheny, Galeon and K-Meleon.  The Mozilla licensingscheme was designed explicitly to encourage people to use the code, andwe’re confident that Flock will prove once again that any numberof browsers can co-exist on top of the Mozilla technology platform.

Why not an extension?
Wetoo love Firefox.  We spent several months investigating (andwriting code) how to deliver what we want to do in the form of aFirefox extension.  In the end, we concluded that we needed torelease our code in the form of a full browser.  We want to beable to offer our users a complete end-to-end user experience, including a single browser download, an update service, technicalsupport…. the works.  Further, we don’t want to breakanyone’s Firefox experience, or have our browser break, due toupdates either way that have not been fully tested propagated.  Inthe short term, that means that fewer people will play with our stuff, but over the long term we believe it’s the right way to go forus.  Of course there will be many people who are perfectly happywith Firefox and are not interested in trying a new browser.  Thegood news for those folks is that there are already hundreds of Firefoxextensions, many of them aimed at integrating social services into thebrowser.

So how will you contribute?
Ofcourse we will contribute all our modifications to Mozilla files backto the community.  We plan to release other code to the Mozillacommunity as well.  When new partners join the Mozilla community, they contribute not just code but also new ideas, and new people withfresh perspectives.  We believe those are important benefits toMozilla, the community, and its millions of users.  Because we area small startup that doesn’t have to worry about maintaining andgrowing a user base of tens of millions of users, we have the freedomto experiment and explore interesting new ideas and features that arenot ready or appropriate to be incorporated into Firefox.  We hopethat some of the crazy ideas we develop here at Flock are ultimatelyincorporated into the core Mozilla code base.

Will Flock be open source?  How will you license your code?
Yes,Flock will be open source.  We may incorporate some proprietarytechnologies into our browser and releases some features under acommercial license, but all of our initial code, and the vast majorityof our code going forward, will be open source.  In fact,we’re just days away from releasing the source code to everythingwe’ve developed so far.

We currently plan to licenseopen source code that’s created by Flock under the GPLlicense.  Modifications to Mozilla files will of course be madeavailable under the MPL license.  We plan to ask that communitycontributors to our code assign copyrights to us, so that we will beable to license code under the MPL/GPL/LGPL triple licensing scheme asappropriate.

What’s taking you so long?  Get the code out already!
Giveus a few more days.  We’ve invited several thousand peopleto play with nightly builds and help us identify and fix the mostembarrassing, egg-all-over-your-face issues so that when we put ourcode out there, the thing won’t wipe out your hard drive. Whilewe’re eager to jump into the open source fray, we also want tomake sure that we don’t make a terrible first impression.

A cutting edge Firefox-based Web browser dubb...

A cutting edge Firefox-based Web browser dubbed 'Flock', which integrates next-generation Web technologies such as RSS content feeds, blogs and bookmark and photo sharing, was launched today.

The browser was developed in California by a small team

of developers spearheaded by Bart Decrem, who is well known in the open source community due to his involvement in the Mozilla Foundation and his ill-fated startup Eazel, which from 1999 until its demise in 2001 aimed to bring greater usability features to the Linux desktop.

"Indeed the time is upon us," wrote Flock co-founder Geoffrey Arone on his blog shortly before the release. "We are gearing up to allow public, unrestricted downloads of the Flock browser within the next couple of hours."

"Please note that this is a developer preview and that there are still plenty of bugs, many of which we are aware of."

The public unveiling comes after Decrem this week e-mailed out invitations to try his new software to a select group of recipients who had previously registered their addresses on the project's Web site. The round of invitations was the third to be issued for the software during its development.

Flocking to new features
The browser's new features are all based around new Web technologies fast attracting fans in the online community, as part of a movement which has come to be known as Web 2.0.

For example, the traditional Web browser bookmarks menu has been replaced in favour of close integration with del.icio.us, an online service which allows bookmarks to be stored and shared with other users.

The Flock team has taken note of the Internet community's rapidly growing obsession with both blogs and the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) standard that makes it possible to speedily know when a blog has been updated.

Flock includes a built-in RSS reader, which allows a user to read all of their favourite blogs in one place, without the need to separately navigate to each one. Various Web sites and software programs already provide this functionality, but Flock is one of the first to integrate it into a Web browser.

The browser also facilitates blogging by the user with a "Create a blog post" button located in the main navigation bar. The button launches a sophisticated blogging tool which integrates on a drag and drop level with Flickr, a popular online photo management and sharing service which was recently acquired by Yahoo.

Flock integrates with a number of popular blogging services, for example, Wordpress, Six Apart and Blogger, according to Decrem's own blog.

All of the features both reflect popular usage within early adopter elements of the Web and are squarely aimed at providing collaborative Web browsing features.

Firefox tensions
Decrem has taken steps recently to convince the open source Mozilla community that his new startup isn't aimed at making their popular Firefox Web browser obsolete.

"I am a firm believer in the power of the open source development model," he wrote yesterday. "So it's always been obvious to me that Flock should leverage existing open source technologies and contribute most, if not all, our enhancements back under an open source license."

He said Flock was not interested in causing problems by creating a code base that diverges from Firefox's own, a development known as 'forking'.

"In architecting our software, build systems and engineering processes, we have given considerable thought to how our code will be able to evolve alongside the Mozilla code, without forking it," he wrote.

"Of course, time will tell how successful we are in avoiding unnecessary divergence between the Flock codebase and the Mozilla code. This ultimately depends on the thousands of engineering decisions we will make in the coming months and years, but also on the level of communication between folks here and the broader Mozilla community."

"For our part, we are very serious about becoming active participants in and contributors to the Mozilla community, starting in the very near future. We are also very open to working with folks at the Mozilla Foundation, the Mozilla Corporation and elsewhere to minimize the risk of platform divergence and have taken the first steps to start that conversation."

Decrem also addressed the issue of how his free software project would attract revenue.

While he acknowledged most Web browsers were freely available, he said several companies like the Mozilla Corporation and competitor Opera had been able to leverage integration between their software and online services like search engines to make money.

"Opera's CEO recently explained that his company was able to release the browser for free thanks to an expanded search sponsorship arrangement with Google," he wrote. "The Mozilla Foundation has alluded to search related business arrangements and has created a for-profit subsidiary."

"In sum, we're quite comfortable that, if enough users choose our browser, we can keep the lights on here at Flock without violating users' privacy or compromising the user experience."

Flock is available for download today for the Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms from the project's Web site.

Googles Zehn Gebote

Empfange nunmehr meine zehn Gebote derInternet-Suche. Und künde den anderen Usern davon immerdar." Under sprach:
