Technology-Based Social Change

Technology-Based Social Change: "vivekg writes 'BBC has published an article featuring the highlights of technological social change from around the world for this year. It is amazing to find out how technology is being used in very different ways for very different communities. Victims of the Tsunami disaster, Virtual Wallets in Japan, and the Indian government, bringing technology to rural areas, all have been touched by the positive use of technology. Hope to see more good community-based collaboration in 2006.'

Jim's Tips | Gmail Tips | Moxi Tips - Gmail Tip #43: ''Notes'' in Just Two Clicks!

Tolle Tipseite :

"Tjeerd" from the Netherlandssubmitted a neat Gmail Tip that takes a different yet very simpleapproach to creating and managing "Notes" in your Gmail account. Notesare simply messages typically sent to yourself to store usefulinformation. Read on for a simple method of creating Notes with justtwo button clicks...In my Gmail Tip #3: How to Maintain "Notes" ,I described a rather elaborate, yet effective way to manage Notes inyour Gmail account. It's elegant, but it requires some setup and priorknowledge of Labels and Filters.Tjeerd suggests an alternative method that leverages the "Draft Message" function:Just click "Compose Mail" and create a message with no recipient. If you want, you can include "Note" in the Subject. Use whatever organizational description you want. Then, write your note, click the "Save Draft" button, and you now have a saved Note...in just two clicks!Basically, you are just creating Draft messages, but the Draft featureis typically very underutilized, so why not make it more useful?Gmail already assigns a specific "View" to Drafts so they are easilyaccessible. Draft messages are treated like any other message, so theyare completely searchable letting you can take full advantage of all ofGmail's great searching capabilities. Additioanlly, you can even applyLabels to make managing even these Notes suitable to your needs! Thanks to Tjeerd for the Tip!

Google Homepage API

Technorati's tortoise

Technorati's tortoise: "I like Technorati, the blog-based search engine. I've been a user since the early days, I know people who work there, and I put in some time to add Technorati links to Salon's pages. I've read Dave Sifry's honest admissions of the company's scaling problems and the efforts they've made to improve the response speed and up-time of their service. The Technorati site indeed seems to work a lot better these days.

But I'm still finding that, for my blog at least, it's simply not doing a very timely job, and 'real-time search' is what Technorati is supposed to be all about. For instance, right now it's reporting that I haven't updated for three days, even while it lists several links to my newer posts. And the RSS feed for the search on links to my blog -- which I subscribed to many moons ago -- has been broken for ages; the search you do on Technorati proper returns plenty of results, but the feed almost never includes what's in the site search. Have they given up on RSS? Is Technorati still hobbling? Is there something I should be doing that I'm not? What's the deal? "

Tracking Transit

Tracking Transit: "The Google Transit Trip Planner launched last week with up-to-the-minute arrival and departure times for buses, streetcars and light rail. It also features fares for each trip and estimates what it would cost if users drove instead, using the Internal Revenue Service's allowable deduction of 40.5 cents per mile over suggested travel routes.

Google Transit so far only has one city; Portland, Oregon, but others are expected to follow soon. According to the Oregonian, Google chose to start with Portland because TriMet already collects a lot of information about routes and its vehicles' locations, and was happy to share.

'The combination of great people and great data made Tri-Met the ideal partner,' Google project manager Avichal Garg wrote on the company's blog.

Much of what Google Transit reports is already available directly from TriMet's own Web site. TriMet uses Orbicomm's GPS gear installed on vehicles to report exactly when they will arrive at each stop, and it makes that live information available on the Web or by phone.

According to the Oregonian, the routes Google recommends are sometimes longer, less convenient and more expensive than those suggested by TriMet.

Bibiana McHugh, a TriMet manager, suggested Thursday that riders not rely on Google Transit to plan their trips until that site improves. [Tri"

del.icio.us: y.ah.oo!: "December 09, 2005
y.ah.oo!

We're proud to announce that del.icio.us has joined the Yahoo! family. Together we'll continue to improve how people discover, remember and share on the Internet, with a big emphasis on the power of community. We're excited to be working with the Yahoo! Search team - they definitely get social systems and their potential to change the web. (We're also excited to be joining our fraternal twin Flickr!)

We want to thank everyone who has helped us along the way - our employees, our great investors and advisors, and especially our users. We still want to get your feedback, and we look forward to bringing you new features and more servers in the future.

I look forward to continuing my vision of social and community memory, and taking it to the next level with the del.icio.us community and Yahoo!"

Synchronize Your Bookmarks Between Different Computers - Pain in the Tech

"Keeping your bookmarks synchronized between different computers is difficult since operating systems represent data differently. While social bookmarking sites like digg and del.icio.us, or RSS readers like Google?s Personalized Home and Bloglines let account holders store links and feeds to their favorite sites, I?ve found that I still want to use traditional bookmarks, but am frustrated when I move between my different computers and they are not there. With the Bookmarks Synchronizer Firefox extension and an FTP account, this problem goes away. If you don?t have access to an FTP server, I?ll show you how to setup a free account at Ripway that you can use with this extension. I?ve successfully used Bookmarks Synchronizer with the latest version of Firefox, on Windows and OS X. The extension can even be configured to upload bookmarks when you close Firefox, and download them when you open it?making it even more convenient.
1. Installing Bookmarks Synchronizer

The first thing you will have to do is visit the Mozilla extensions page and either search for ?Bookmarks Synchronizer? or click this link. At the time of this writing I am running Firefox 1.0.7 for Windows and OS X, and at least one user has had a successful installation with 1.5RC. If you can?t remember"

Fremdenlegion

macosxhints - 10.4: Use the Finder as an outliner

macosxhints - 10.4: Use the Finder as an outliner: "So, what is the perfect outliner? I wanted it to be project related. Ideas and project files should be organized in one simple way. I tested many outliners, but they all had the same problem: some stuff stays in the Finder (important but unsupported project files like Freehand, Illustrator etc.) and other stuff (ideas, mindmaps, notes...) goes into the outliner.

So you need the Finder for the project files, and the outliner as a conceptional layer. That just didn't feel right. I think the Finder is still the best way to organize files and folders for projects. So I just needed some way to store text and multimedia in one file inside these project folders ... and there is a somewhat obvious way: .rtfd files.

? Mobile Web browsers - Microsoft's downfall? | Web 2.0 Explorer | ZDNet.com: "'Firefox 15% market share is already enough to oblige most web sites to drop IE only strategy. The key change will come, soon, when over 50% of Web browsing will be done on mobile objects, like PDA or smartphones. This is already the case in Europe or Asia. By 2008, the market share of IE on ALL browsing devices may well be under 50%!

As long as users can access a web site from Opera on a smarphone, Safari on a Powerbook and Firefox on a PC, market shares of each browser will not matter much, which is a very good thing!'

An address book ontology

An address book ontology: "Years ago, when I was using a Palm device for my address book, calendar, etc., I arranged to convert that data into RDF. I described that work in Generalized Metadata in your Palm, a paper that I presented at Extreme Markup Languages in 2002. ?

When I converted from the Palm to the Sidekick, I temporarily lost the RDF. I had no trouble, thanks to Dan Connolly and the T-Mobile XML/RPC interface, getting XML out, but I wasn't getting RDF. (I could have, Dan does, but I didn't because it was quicker to get my local infrastructure running again just from the straight XML.) ?"
